We do this by collecting, researching, protecting, preserving, describing, documenting, engaging, angering, delighting, debating, inspiring, learning, listening and entertaining.

The stories make us remember our city's history. The stories also give us perspective on our city in our own time. And while we look back, we create future stories about Stockholm through our lives in the city.

The idea of the City Museum is to be in the middle of all that. In the middle of the storytelling. We want to be a place for Stockholm stories. A place for Stockholmers and visitors to the city.

Artipelag

The name Artipelag is a combination of Art, Activities and Archipelago. That says a lot about what we can offer, but it's far from everything. Our intention has been to create a high-level international destination - with cross-border art exhibitions, inspiring activities and good food.

Here, on just over 10,000 square meters, there is a large art gallery and a shop with our own design products. Here stands our Artbox - a huge event, recording and event venue with associated artist spaces. Here there are activity spaces for children and young people, conference rooms of various sizes and two restaurants - both with outdoor seating and magnificent sea views.

Livrustkammaren

In 1628, Gustav II Adolf decided that the clothes he had worn on a campaign in Poland should be preserved “in the Armory for an eternal memory.” This laid the foundation for the Livrustkammaren, Sweden’s oldest museum.

During the 16th century, the Armoury was the armory of the Swedish kings. When Gustav II Adolf decided that his clothes should be preserved forever, it marked the beginning of a museum tradition - to save them to show to posterity. Ever since then, it has been possible to see the objects and remember the lives and deeds of their owners.

Over the centuries, weapons and objects such as ceremonial robes, horse costumes and carriages have been transferred from the Royal Wardrobe and the Court Stables to the Royal Armoury. These objects are associated with the royal personages and have mainly been used on ceremonial occasions such as weddings, coronations and funerals.

Open every day in the summer from 10am to 5pm.

Fjärilshuset

Enjoy the feeling of walking among the free-flying butterflies in large tropical greenhouses. Among waterfalls and lush vegetation, you will discover the wonders of nature. Discover the mating dance of the butterflies, the joy of the caterpillars in eating and if you are lucky, watch when a butterfly hatches. Some of the butterflies are imported here as pupae, and some butterflies go through their entire life cycle inside the greenhouses at Haga.

The Butterfly House covers over 3000 square meters and the surroundings are tropical. The temperature never drops below 25 degrees during the day, and even at night it is at least 18 degrees. The humidity is always high and these conditions make the butterflies thrive. During a year, several thousand butterflies live here, and every time you visit us there are at least 700 butterflies of a variety of different species. The butterflies are exotic in our latitudes, while they are relatively common at home. There are no endangered butterflies at the Butterfly House.

Vasamuseet

The Vasa Museum has become an obvious part of Stockholm's skyline. With its masts jutting out over Djurgården, it has become a beacon for curious tourists and Stockholmers. Vasa's residence has not always been so grand. After the ship was salvaged, it was given a temporary home in the Wasavarvet shipyard where she stayed between 1961 and 1988 – a whole 27 years!

THE COMPETITION
In 1981, an open Nordic architectural competition was announced for the new permanent Vasa Museum. 384 proposals were submitted. And it was the Swedish architects Marianne Dahlbäck and Göran Månsson's entry "Ask" that won. Construction of the museum began on November 2, 1987, after Prince Bertil inaugurated the building and laid the first foundation stone at an old dry dock from 1878.

VASA'S LAST JOURNEY
And soon the ship would be hidden from outsiders for almost a year. In September 1988, the ship was built into a protective shell in its place inside the Vasa shipyard. This was to prepare the journey to the new museum. A journey that the ship would make by sea. In December 1988, the Vasa made its last voyage to date at sea. Resting on a pontoon, the ship was transported inside a protective shell to its new home. The ship was now in a water-filled dry dock inside the new Vasa Museum. And slowly, the water could begin to be released from the dry dock and the protective shell around the Vasa could be removed.

THE NEW MUSEUM OPENS
In the summer of 1989, the sneak preview of the new museum, which was still a construction site at the time, began. And almost a quarter of a million visitors were able to see the partially exposed ship. On June 15, 1990, the museum was officially inaugurated by Carl XVI Gustaf, and since then millions of visitors from all over the world have found their way here. 20 years later, the premises had become too small. With over a million visitors, we began expanding the museum in the fall of 2011. The construction was completed in May 2013.

Judiska museet

The Jewish Museum's permanent exhibition displays objects related to Jewish religion, tradition and history.

In addition, the museum has temporary exhibitions related to Jewish life in Sweden.

Thielska Galleriet

The Thielska Galleriet is considered Sweden's foremost art museum and is beautifully situated in a walled park on Blockhusudden on Djurgården in Stockholm. The house was created for the banker and financier Ernest Thiel's magnificent art collection, was designed by Ferdinand Boberg and was completed in 1907. The Thielska Galleriet museum was the home of the art patron Ernest Thiel until 1924 and is largely preserved in its original condition.

The unique collection from the turn of the last century contains works of art by, among others, Bruno Liljefors, Edvard Munch, Eugène Jansson, Carl Larsson, August Strindberg and Anders Zorn. The collection and the house form a beautiful unit. The upper floor has been designed according to Thiel's idea of two large halls "whose walls would be covered with paintings". Both halls, and the large Munch Hall, receive beautiful daylight from the glass roof. In the tower room there is Nietzsche's death mask and graphics by Edvard Munch. On the lower floor is the gallery section, which consists of 5 rooms in a row. Temporary exhibitions with contemporary artists are shown here. In the long term, the old curator's residence will also be used for exhibitions and project activities.

The different parts of the buildings have been added to each other in a way that brings to mind both the Italian Renaissance and southern European and oriental building traditions. Equally relevant is its affinity with the special form of late Art Nouveau represented by the architecture of the so-called Viennese School. It is characterized by geometric and cubic forms and clean surfaces with sparse decoration.

In the hilly park there are sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Tobias Sergel and Gustav Vigeland, among others, which will eventually be combined with contemporary expressions. Ernest Thiel's urn is buried in the rock under Rodin's sculpture The Shadow.

Spritmuseum

Spritmuseum, located in Galärskjulen on Djurgården, is a museum that displays art and alcohol. The goal is to constantly surprise through exhibitions, tastings, programs and not least when it comes to food and drink. In the art gallery, dedicated to the Absolut Art Collection, works from the collection are displayed interspersed with exhibitions by invited Absolut artists.

The museum has actually existed since 1967. That year, the Vin & Sprithistoriska Museet opened on Dalagatan in Stockholm, more or less a company museum for Vin & Sprit AB. Since 2013, the museum has been located on Djurgården.

Millesgården

The artist couple Carl and Olga Milles bought a plot of land in 1906 on Herserudsklippan high above Värtan on Lidingö. Their wish was to build a home with accompanying artist studios. The house was designed by architect Carl M. Bengtsson and built in 1908. Over the next half century, Millesgården was expanded and developed in collaboration with Carl Milles' half-brother, architect Evert Milles.

Between 1911 and 1913, the first extension was built, an open-air studio in the form of a loggia, designed to improve Carl's working environment. The sculptor had contracted severe stone lung caused by inhaling dust while carving stone.

As Carl Mille's income from sculpture commissions increased during the 1920s, adjacent land was acquired on the southern slope of the cliff. With the addition of the middle terrace, the sculpture garden became larger and another sculpture workshop, Lilla Ateljén, was built.

During the Milles couple's time in the United States from 1931-50, the pace of construction at Millesgården slowed down. However, Evert Milles drew up new floor plans in anticipation of upcoming expansion projects.

In 1936, Millesgården was converted into a foundation and given as a gift to the Swedish people.

Before the Milles couple returned to Millesgården in 1950, construction began on the large Lower Terrace with monumental replicas of free-standing sculptures and fountain groups from the USA and Sweden. The lower terrace, with the couple's new residence Anne's House, designed by Evert Milles, was largely complete by the time of Carl Milles' death on 19 September 1955.

Postmuseum

With its extensive and unique postal history and philatelic collections, the Post Museum in Stockholm is considered one of the world's foremost postal museums. It is a national museum that collects, preserves and displays the history of the Swedish postal system so that current and future generations can enjoy this cultural and historical heritage.

The museum is located in a beautiful cultural center dating back to the 17th century. It was purchased by the Post Office in 1720 and housed Stockholm's only post office until 1869. The museum was inaugurated in 1906. At the time, it only included a few rooms, but today it occupies the entire house. In total, the house has 3,300 square meters, of which 2,300 square meters are for visitors.

Liljevalchs Konsthall

Welcome to Liljevalchs - Stockholm's most beautiful exhibition environment! Here we show art and design in at least four large and generous exhibitions a year.

Liljevalch's exhibition program is aimed at both a very broad audience and those who are particularly interested in certain artists or art and design trends. Each new art year begins with the well-known jury-judged Spring Salon.

Liljevalchs belongs to the city of Stockholm and was inaugurated in 1916 as the first independent and public art gallery for contemporary art in Sweden. The building was designed by architect Carl Bergsten and is located on the scenic Djurgården in Stockholm.

Skoklosters Slott

Welcome to Carl Gustaf Wrangel's castle on the waters of Lake Mälaren. Skokloster Castle is one of Europe's most evocative and astonishing environments.

Shimmering splendors and trivial things, luxury and everyday life fill the general's residence. Skokloster Castle is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. The architecture, the intact interiors and the large collections of objects make Skokloster Castle one of Europe's foremost Baroque castles.

The extensive collections include a wealth of furniture, crafts, textiles, weapons and books from the 17th century. In addition, there are objects from the castle's later owners in the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. Better than in most places, we know here who made, used and admired the well-preserved furnishings and objects.

Moderna Museet

Moderna Museet has one of the world's foremost collections of art from around 1900 to the present day. The photographic section also covers the period from around 1840. Moderna Museet's mission is to collect, preserve, display and communicate 20th and 21st century art in all its forms.

The Moderna Museet in Stockholm was inaugurated on May 9, 1958, in the old exercise house on Skeppsholmen.

The assignment to design the new Moderna Museet went, after an international competition, to the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. The goal was to inaugurate the building in connection with Stockholm's 1998 Capital of Culture, which also happened - on 12 February 1998.

Strindbergsmuseet

The author August Strindberg (1849-1912) lived the last four years of his life in what he himself called the Blue Tower, a three-room apartment without a kitchen at Drottninggatan 85, four flights of stairs up. The residence in the Blue Tower is the only one of Strindberg's 24 apartments in Stockholm that can be seen.

Thanks to his good friend Vilhelm Carlheim-Gyllenskiöld, who documented the apartment and ensured that Strindberg's legacy was not dispersed after his death, the three-room apartment could be reconstructed and opened as a museum in 1973. In addition to the apartment with Strindberg's own furniture, the museum consists of basic exhibitions depicting Strindberg as a writer, painter, photographer and theatre man. Temporary exhibitions, lectures and other program activities are regularly arranged.

Adjacent to the museum is Strindberg's own library, consisting of 2,800 volumes. For researchers and the general public there are large collections of photographs, press clippings, posters and program sheets. By arrangement, the museum's library with 4,000 volumes of Strindbergiana can also be used. The museum has a wide selection of books by and about August Strindberg, as well as postcards, posters etc. for sale at the reception.

De Kungliga Slotten

Welcome to one of Europe's largest and most vibrant castles. The castle is the official residence of HM the King and essential parts of the monarchy's representation take place here, while large parts of the castle are open all year round.

The palace is the workplace of the King and Queen and the offices that are part of the Royal Court. The Royal Palace is a combination of royal residence, workplace and cultural and historical monument, and is open to visitors all year round.

Built in the Baroque style by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and designed like a Roman palace, the castle has more than 600 rooms spread over eleven floors, with the state rooms facing the city and the smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard.

Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum

Sven-Harrys (Art Museum) opened on March 27, 2011 at the initiative of master builder Sven-Harry Karlsson. The shiny six-story building with a brass facade is located in Vasaparken in Stockholm and was designed by Anna Höglund and Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor. It houses an art gallery, museum, restaurant, residential apartments and commercial premises. The building is intended to be a “home” for both art and people.

Sven-Harrys is run by a foundation with the aim of highlighting quality in art and construction and to conduct a varied exhibition activity. The foundation regularly awards a scholarship for meritorious contributions in the arts and related fields.

Carl Eldhs Ateljémuseum

Carl Eldh (1873-1954) is one of Sweden's most famous sculptors. His works can be found in a large number of public places, museums and private collections in Sweden and abroad. Beautifully located in Bellevueparken in Stockholm, overlooking Brunnsviken, Carl Eldh's studio is preserved as a museum.

In the original studio building, which was built in 1918-19 according to drawings by architect Ragnar Östberg, Carl Eldh lived and worked for over thirty years. The studio has remained largely untouched since the artist's death and, in addition to work tools and personal belongings, houses the majority of Carl Eldh's collected works, over four hundred works in plaster, clay, stone and bronze are on display.

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, originally the home of Prince Eugen (1865-1947), is today one of Sweden's most visited art museums. The museum offers a varied and extensive range of exhibitions and programs. A selection of Prince Eugen's own art, works from the collections and temporary exhibitions are on display throughout the year.

The museum consists of the main building, “The Castle”, which was built in 1903-1905 as a residence for Prince Eugen, and the gallery building that was added in 1913. The architect Ferdinand Boberg designed both buildings, but in close collaboration with Prince Eugen. The prince, who was the son of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia, was one of the foremost landscape painters of his time. He was also a significant art collector and a central figure in Swedish cultural life.

Uppsala domkyrka

Uppsala Cathedral, Sweden's national shrine, began construction in the 1270s and was consecrated in 1435. Over seven centuries, millions of people have sought it out. You are warmly welcome, every day of the year.

Taking part in a guided tour of the cathedral or the Treasury Museum will make your visit extra memorable. Look around in peace and quiet while the guide explains and answers questions.

The cathedral's tours are aimed at everyone. We adapt the tour to the age and abilities of the participants. Please let us know when booking if you would like the guide to emphasize a certain time period or subject area.

We offer tours of the cathedral, the Treasury Museum and the outdoor environment near the cathedral. However, it is not possible to visit the cathedral tower.
